The Great Stupa of Sanchi

Commissioned by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE, the Great Stupa of Sanchi is the oldest surviving stone structure in India and one of the most important Buddhist monuments in the world. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1989.

The site features intricately carved toranas (gateways) depicting scenes from the life of the Buddha and the Jataka tales. For Buddhist pilgrims from across the globe, Sanchi is a place of profound spiritual significance — a serene hilltop where the teachings of the Buddha have been preserved in stone for over two millennia.

Sanghamitra is named after Sanghamitta, the daughter of Emperor Ashoka, who carried a sapling of the sacred Bodhi tree to Sri Lanka — embodying the spirit of sharing wisdom and hospitality across borders.
